Wild Science

Wild Science

Wild Science investigates the world-wide boom in ‘health culture’. While self-help health books and medical dramas are popular around the globe, we are bombarded with daily media images of DNA research, and news reports about cloning, the fight against AIDS, cancer and depression. With popular culture now the principal means through which the non-scientific population encounters science why do certain images of science get promoted above others?Contributors examine the public meanings of science, revealing the frictions and contradictions within popular representations of what medicine can and should do. Focusing on the visual culture of medicine, they show how representations of science have a direct impact on popular perceptions of the limits of science, and ultimately on health education, funding and research, and examine the belief that media literacy in popular representations of medicine makes an ethical public discourse on the aims of science possible. With sections addressing the new visual technologies which make the human body into a virtual territory, the diagnostic and medical practices centered around women’s bodies, and popular debates around genetics and identity, Wild Science argues that science is a practice bound in values and institutions, and argues for a responsible engagement with the public cultures of science and health.

A Tragedy in the Making

The Flint lead crisis has been called Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder’s Hurricane Katrina because of errors made by state and local officials under his watch in causing and managing this public health emergency. These mistakes include changing Flint’s water supply from Detroit to the polluted Flint River without taking appropriate low-cost measures to prevent toxic metals from leaking into the water, and delaying help by ignoring or disputing outcries from local residents about the dangerous health conditions created by this policy. Because of these failed decisions, this public policy disaster will cost up to $ 1.5 billion to fix, burdening an already overwhelmed state economy. But, for the residents of Flint, this tragedy was years in the making.

Although directly caused by the flawed policies of 2014, research on other disadvantaged US communities facing public health crises suggest the roots of the current crisis lie in Flint’s crushing economic decline that began in the 1960s and accelerated in the 1980s and 90s following the closure of its General Motors plants. Unemployment and poverty soared, creating numerous social problems including high crime and violence from which many residents who could afford to move fled while the less fortunate were forced to stay behind. This flight created a community of poor, mostly Black residents without the economic means or political power to improve their living conditions.

According to the World Health Organization, people living in poverty are at greater risk for poor health than their peers in large part because they live in resource-poor, often unsafe environments that make it difficult to make healthy choices. By 2010, 15% of Flint’s population was unemployed, 42% lived in poverty, and the violent crime rate was 5 times greater than the national average. Like other disadvantaged US communities, Flint, even before being exposed to contaminated water, lacked many important basic resources needed for healthy living. Few grocery stores were available for Flint residents to buy healthy foods such as fresh produce, the housing system was broken with abandoned properties littering the landscape, and nearly 60% of city parks had been rated “poor” or “mediocre,”discouraging residents and their children from engaging in safe physical activity.

But the main reason these longstanding community problems existed–and continue to exist–in Flint is that people living in poverty are most often marginalized or completely excluded from public policy decision-making processes, leaving them with little power to challenge unhealthy policies. This was disturbingly illustrated in the current crisis, when Flint residents who complained about their toxic water found their cries repeatedly silenced by government officials for over a year, until outside researchers and dedicated medical professionals uncovered the truth and sparked national public outrage.

The Flint lead crisis serves as a tragic reminder that people living in poverty remain the most vulnerable, disempowered, and unhealthy members of our society. It also reminds us that even temporary public policies that neglect to consider their health and safety can have profound and lifelong negative consequences. Lessons learned from the Flint crisis will have a short shelf life if we choose to ignore the numerous problems that too many poor and disadvantaged communities in the country face or address them only when they play out on the national stage.

Extradition Order Forces U.S. To Confront Its Role In Persecuting The Latin American Church

In their landmark book, Manufacturing Consent, Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman devote a chapter to the media’s unbalanced coverage of the murder of one priest in Poland in 1984 as compared to the coverage of the 72 religious killed throughout Latin America between 1964 and 1978, the killing of 23 religious in Guatemala between 1980 and 1985, the murder of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador in 1980 and the rape and murder of the 4 U.S. Church women in El Salvador in 1980. In short, the murder of the one Polish priest — the perpetrators of which were actually tried, convicted and sentenced to prison — received significantly more coverage than all of the latter killings, which largely remain unsolved and unpunished, combined.

Of course, the reason for the disparity in coverage is that the Western media invariably fixates on the crimes of others while ignoring our own crimes. In this case, the media focused on the murder of one priest in then-Communist Poland while largely ignoring the scores of priests killed by right-wing governments aligned with and supported by the United States.

Fast forward to the present when the National Catholic Reporter (NCR) has just reported on the extradition order for Col. Inocente Orlando Montano to be tried for his role in the murder of six (6) Jesuit priests, along with their housekeeper and her daughter, in El Salvador on November 16, 1989. Montano is being extradited to Spain from the U.S. where he has been comfortably sheltered for years. As the NCR reported:

In her 23-page ruling, [Judge] Swank said the evidence shows that Montano participated in the “terrorist” murders and attended the key meetings where the high command plotted the assassination of Jesuit Father Ignacio Ellacuría, the rector of the University of Central America.

Ellacuría was also serving as a key negotiator trying to mediate a peace between the US-backed Salvadoran government and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN.) The peace talks included discussions about purging the military of those officers linked to atrocities.

The operation to eliminate Ellacuría and all witnesses was carried out Nov. 16, 1989 by a US-trained anti-terrorist unit, which stormed the Central American University in San Salvador and blew out the brains of the Jesuits with high-powered weapons. The assassins then executed their housekeeper, Julia Elba Ramos, and her daughter Celina.

(emphasis added).

The NCR notes that Montano “was also trained at the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA) at Fort Benning, Ga., now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation.” (emphasis added)

That Montano, a murderer of Catholic priests, was trained at the SOA makes perfect sense, for the SOA — which continues to train thousands of repressive Latin American military forces — has itself bragged about its role in destroying Liberation Theology (the Christian philosophy which advocates “the preferential treatment for the poor”) in Latin America. As Noam Chomsky has explained, “[o]ne of its advertising points is that the U.S. Army [School of the Americas] helped defeat liberation theology, which was a dominant force, and it was an enemy for the same reason that secular nationalism in the Arab world was an enemy – it was working for the poor.”

And, the SOA specifically encouraged the violent assault on priests, as Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer notes in his book, School of Assassins. Thus, as he explains, 75 percent of the training exercises at the SOA ended with the priest or other religious figure (usually played by a U.S. army chaplain) either killed or wounded.

As Noam Chomsky has noted elsewhere, the U.S.’s military campaign in Latin America since 1962

was in substantial measure a war against the Church. It was more than symbolic that it culminated in the assassination of six leading Latin American intellectuals, Jesuit priests, in November 1989, a few days after the fall of the Berlin wall. They were murdered by an elite Salvadoran battalion, fresh from renewed training at the John F. Kennedy Special Forces School in North Carolina. As was learned last November, but apparently aroused no interest, the order for the assassination was signed by the chief of staff and his associates, all of them so closely connected to the Pentagon and the US Embassy that it becomes even harder to imagine that Washington was unaware of the plans of its model battalion. This elite force had already left a trail of blood of the usual victims through the hideous decade of the 1980s in El Salvador, which opened with the assassination of Archbishop Romero, “the voice of the voiceless,” by much the same hands.

The murder of the Jesuit priests was a crushing blow to liberation theology, the remarkable revival of Christianity initiated by Pope John XXIII at Vatican II, which he opened in 1962, an event that “ushered in a new era in the history of the Catholic Church,” in the words of the distinguished theologian and historian of Christianity Hans KŸng. Inspired by Vatican II, Latin American Bishops adopted “the preferential option for the poor,” renewing the radical pacifism of the Gospels that had been put to rest when the Emperor Constantine established Christianity as the religion of the Roman Empire — “a revolution” that converted “the persecuted church” to a “persecuting church,” in KŸng’s words. In the post-Vatican II attempt to revive the Christianity of the pre-Constantine period, priests, nuns, and laypersons took the message of the Gospels to the poor and the persecuted, brought them together in “base communities,” and encouraged them to take their fate into their own hands and to work together to overcome the misery of survival in brutal realms of US power.

Thankfully, the U.S.’s reprehensible campaign abroad to wipe out true Christianity – as opposed to the bizarre brand predominating in the U.S. which has strangely substituted a false Christ-the-Destroyer for Christ-the-Carpenter — has not been completely successful, with Liberation Theologians indeed taking credit for helping give rise to Pope Francis and his emphasis on poverty issues.

Still, much damage has been done, and many lives lost, as the result of a military program which has persecuted the Church in the name of defending it against “godless Communism.” That we as a nation have allowed this to go on is cause for profound self-reflection and atonement, though, thanks to a supplicant mainstream press, few will ever know that any of this has transpired.

11 Foods To Stock In The Fridge To Make Healthy Eating Easy

Eating healthy today presents lots of challenges. There’s the whole willpower thing to conquer, which is huge considering how many great bakeries exist in the U.S. alone. Then, there’s the planning that goes into how to pull it off with such a busy schedule — unhealthy foods always seem to be easier to find in a pinch. But there is a way to make it easier, and it all starts with the fridge.

If you take the time to stock your fridge with the right foods, healthy eating becomes a cinch. Especially if you stock these 11 items:

1. Cooked whole grains like quinoa, barley, wheat berries or farro. Whole grains take longer to cook than refined grains like white rice, so it’s a good idea to double or triple the batch when you make some. Then you’ll have filling grains to complement a nutritious dinner, turn into a grain salad or beef up a regular salad into a more substantial meal.

2. Homemade dressing. Store-bought salad dressings are often loaded with sugar. If you make your own at home, you can eliminate that sneaky ingredient and boost flavor, too — homemade dressing is so much tastier. Make a whole bottle’s worth, it’ll keep for a long while.

3. Pre-roasted veggies. Roasted vegetables — like broccoli and cauliflower — taste like a treat. The slight caramelization sweetens them just so, making them a satisfying midday snack all on their own. And they’re also a great addition for making salads or veggie bowls even better.

4. Peanut butter. Trust us. Peanut butter is full of protein. It makes a great snack on celery sticks, apple slices and a simple slice of whole grain bread. It’s also a great way to make smoothies more filling and oatmeal, too.

5. Chopped veggies. Loading up your fridge with healthy fruits and veggies is one thing, but if they require washing, peeling and chopping, the vegetables probably won’t be what you reach for when you need a snack in a pinch. Take a few extra minutes to prep them after unloading groceries from the supermarket. Your busy work week will thank you.

6. Hard-boiled eggs. Best, quickest protein-filled snack ever. Plus, they can also be turned into a healthy sandwich and are great salad toppers, too.

7. Cheese. Most of us are taught that cheeses are not a good idea when trying to stay healthy, but this is not always the case. Some cheeses, like feta and Parmesan, are much healthier than you’d think. And they add a creamy flavor to foods that will help curb cravings when the taste for something rich should strike.

8. Already-washed greens. Ask yourself this: Are you really going to make a salad if you have to wash the greens first? Storing the greens ready to eat gets you one step closer to making a wise meal choice.

9. Plain yogurt. Whether Greek or regular yogurt is your thing, this is one versatile ingredient that definitely deserves a spot in your healthy fridge. Not only does it make a great breakfast or quick snack, but it’s also very useful in as a healthy ingredient substitute for more indulgent foods, like sour cream. (Just stay away from the flavored ones, which can be loaded with sugar.)

10. Healthy drink options. Think homemade iced teas and spa waters. It’s the easiest way to stay hydrated when you can’t possibly imagine drinking another glass of water without reaching for sodas or juices.

11. Nutritious condiments — yes, they exist! Put down the ketchup and reach for the miso paste. Tahini, harissa, pesto and salsas are also great options. These healthy condiments are great drizzled on top of dishes to keep your meals interesting, and they’re also a great ingredient for cooking, too.

Stock up on these 11 ingredients today, and see how much easier — and tastier — healthy eating becomes!

The Blessing

The Blessing

"Another delightful and entertaining story with characters who walk off the pages into the reader’s heart…truly a winner," said "Rendezvous" about Jude Deveraux’s "An Angel for Emily." "All sorts of clever turns and surprises. Definitely a keeper…wow " raved the "Philadelphia Inquirer." Now the beloved "New York Times" bestselling author concocts a charming, piquant tale about a take-charge businessman and a daffy but wise young widow, the special bonds of brotherhood, and the eternal love between mother and child, all set in a small Kentucky town during Christmas, the season of… The Blessing When wealthy, hard-driving corporate genius Jason Wilding reluctantly takes a break from his business and his husband-hunting girlfriends for a Christmas visit to his hometown in Abernathy, Kentucky, he has no idea what his physician brother, David, has in store for him. It seems that Amy Thompkins, a whimsical young widow with definite artistic talent, has captured David’s heart, but courting her with a demanding baby in tow has been difficult. In order to pursue her, he persuades Jason to move into her home and take care of her spoiled but adorable son, Max, for a week. For a fiercely efficient CEO, it’s an impossible scene: a falling-down old house; buckets on the dining room floor to catch the rain; a widow living on next to nothing, with no marketable skills. But Amy’s joy for life, her love for her son, and her sparkling humor are irresistible — and tiny Max adores Jason beyond reason. Soon, Jason sees Amy and her future as a prime target for his strategic planning. Importing his private chef to prepare the little one’s food and buying a baby store so that his mothercan get real bargains are just the beginning. Because enigmatic Jason is thawing — the tender feelings and longing he has buried for years are begging to be heard. And when he smiles, Amy is reminded of a Mount Rushmore monument finally cracking up — in the best possible way. The mutual attraction is glowing bright, but what to do about David? Once again, Jude Deveraux’s deft hand and loving vision conjure up a novel full of surprises and delights, in a story that will warm all our hearts and make us believe in the power of miracles, large and small. It’s a tale for all seasons, and a love story to remember always.

New Mentalities of Government in China

New Mentalities of Government in China

China continues to transform apace, flowing from the forces of deregulation, privatization and globalization unleashed by economic reforms which began in late 1978. The dramatic scope of economic change in China is often counterposed to the apparent lack of political change as demonstrated by continued Chinese Communist Party (CCP) rule. However, the ongoing dominance of the CCP belies the fact that much has also changed in relation to practices of government, including how authorities and citizens interact in the management of daily life.New Mentalities of Government in China examines how the privatization and professionalization of ‘public’ service provision is transforming the nature of government and everyday life in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The book addresses key theoretical questions on the nature of government in China and documents the emergence of a range of ‘new mentalities of government’ in China. Its chapters focus on areas such as clinical trials, conceptualizing government, consumer activity, elite philanthropy, lifestyle and beauty advice, public health, social work, volunteering; and urban and rural planning.Offering a topical examination of shifting modes of governance in contemporary China, this book will appeal to scholars in the fields of anthropology, history, politics and sociology.

The Moment I Realized I Had A Drinking Problem

I was reading a book I wrote when I realized: I had to give up drinking.

This happened a few months back. I had just finished writing this novel, and was reading it over one more time, the way I always do before a piece of my work is published. And it was hearing my own words about addiction to alcohol, spoken in the voice of my fictional character, that revealed to me what my daily morning headache, and my trips to the recycling bin with all those empty bottles, had not.

There was a reason why I had been able to get into the head of a woman who had a problem with alcohol. I had one too.

The narrator in my story is not me, but like so many people I know — women in particular — she used wine as a way of dealing with stress and sorrow in her life. Like me, she never called herself an alcoholic because she never got drunk. She just drank. Too much. And where some people can enjoy wine when they have it, and feel fine when they don’t, she can feel the bottle calling to her at the end of the day. As it has called to me.

The narrator of my new novel gets a DUI and loses custody of her child — something that never happened to me during my many years as a single parent raising my three children. But her story is one I can relate to.

It was those years after my marriage to my children’s father ended — when wine became, for me, a companion, almost a lover — that my occasional glass of wine became a nightly ritual. One glass turned into two glasses, and sometimes three, and I recognized that I was watching the clock for the magic hour of 5 p.m. when I could legitimately open the bottle.

I never got drunk . I was just “taking the edge off”. But I also recognized that reaching for a glass of wine, or three, had become my response to stress or sorrow in my life. And like most women I know — most human beings — there was generally plenty of that.

I am not alone. Many of the women I know around my age have acquired a drinking habit like mine. Divorced, or widowed, or married but facing the strains parenthood, of aging, or caring for aging parents, experiencing health challenges, financial challenges, and the growing awareness of all the dreams we hoped for in our youth that will go unfulfilled, we find comfort in the consumption of alcohol. What’s the matter with that?

Just over four years ago, driving home from a dinner party — one of those great, warm summer evenings out on the porch when the host keeps topping off your glass of Chianti so you never quite know where you stand — I saw a flashing blue light in my rear view mirror. Five minutes later, I was reciting the alphabet backwards for the police officer and getting out of my car to demonstrate my ability to walk a straight line. Not well enough, evidently: I was handcuffed and brought to the police station to take a breathalyzer test.

I passed the test. They let me go with no charges other than a speeding ticket..

This should have been the moment when I gave up drinking. Only I didn’t. I just gave up driving if I’d had even one glass of wine — something that’s not easy to accomplish if you live on a mountain and you’re single, as I was at the time, and you’d like to get together with your friends now and then, and they don’t live within walking distance.

I told myself I was not an alcoholic. I knew this because I took an online test to determine whether I might be. The fact that I took this test might have been sufficient evidence to suggest otherwise, but as with the breathalyzer, I passed.

But I recognized that I had an unhealthy relationship with drinking. And because I am also the daughter of an alcoholic, I knew what addiction looks like, and I knew that I carried a genetic predisposition to substance abuse.

Not long after that night I was pulled over, I met the very good man (and good driver) to whom I am now married. I was happy, and in love, and I loved that moment at the end of our work day when we’d sit outside and have a glass of wine together. After all those years on my own, I celebrated the experience of having a partner at last. If I had a second glass of wine — or if we killed the bottle, even — where was the harm in that?

A little over a year after the wedding, my husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The first doctor told us it was probably inoperable.

The grief was crushing. And though there was much I would do later — including finding a surgeon who offered us real hope — the first thing I did, when we got home after getting the news about Jim, was to pour myself a drink.

Over the year that followed — of chemotherapy and radiation, then a 14-hour surgery, then months of pain and ongoing uncertainty about the future — it was Jim’s illness I used as my excuse for not giving up drinking. “It’s a small comfort at the end of a hard day,” I told my friends (though really the person I was telling was myself). “I am letting myself have this gift, for now.” If it even was a gift.

I finished my novel — the one about the woman whose relationship with wine leads to a disaster in her life. All those months, as I wrote her story, I kept drinking my wine.

Slowly, my husband recovered from the surgery. Though he is not out of the woods, his most recent MRI revealed no evidence of disease. To celebrate, we drank.

Then the galleys of my new novel arrived. As I read them, I considered my assertion (so frequently repeated over those months) that I would give up wine when life was easier. Now I asked myself, just when was that day going to come — for any of us? What did it mean to imagine that you can wash away an aching sorrow or an ongoing anxiety with a little Zinfandel? What was I accomplishing, when I raised the arms of the corkscrew (the corkscrew that looks, I have at times reflected, so much like a woman), besides numbing my senses from taking in the full weight of what’s going on in my life?

When I gave up drinking. I didn’t say I’d never again know the taste of wine. I only tell myself that I cannot drink today. And though sadness and worry are still part of my life — as they are for us all — for a few weeks now I’ve been facing them without wine.

I won’t claim to have come out the other end of this struggle. I’m not sure if any of us who feel the pull of an addiction ever does that. But I am feeling strong with my decision, and strong, period. And because it has been my way, for most of my life, not simply to live through my struggles but to share them, for the next couple of weeks I’ll be talking about this one here.

(To be continued next Monday.)

A Voters’ Guide To Comparing Presidential Candidates: Imagine Them As Used Car Salesman

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Would you buy a used car from Ted Cruz? What about Donald Trump or Jeb Bush? And if so, what kind of deal would you get?

The answers to these questions can actually be very informative and help show how voters perceive each candidate. Inside Ben Carson‘s headquarters in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Saturday, Mark Sullivan, an undecided voter from Massachusetts, matched nearly all the big-name White House aspirants with the type of car they’d try to sell you.

Watch Sullivan explain his theory above.

“If you go to somebody like Dr. Carson here, you know you’re going to get the car he’s telling you about. He’s an honest guy. You may not like every feature about that car, but you’re getting the car,” Sullivan said.

With Donald Trump, “he’s going to tell you this is the greatest car ever,” Sullivan added. “It’s a fantastic car. It gets a million miles to the gallon and you don’t ever have to put gas in the tank. You know he’s full of it, but it’s still interesting.”

He’d be willing to buy that car, but would probably get it checked out first before committing.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton “will make the car whatever you want it to be.”

And the one candidate he wouldn’t buy a car from? That would be Cruz.

Sexually Transmitted Zika Highlights Brazil’s Rampant Inequality

On Friday, scientists detected Zika virus in both urine and saliva for the first time, classifying the virus in the bodily fluid samples as “active.” That means the fluid samples are capable of transmitting Zika. This finding, coupled with recent reports of a sexually transmitted Zika case in Texas, indicates that sexual contact may become a significant mode of transmission for the disease.

The conclusion bodes poorly for the most impoverished women in Brazil and other Latin American countries, where access to comprehensive sex education and reproductive care — including abortion — is spotty to nonexistent.

While Brazilian researchers cautioned that it was too soon to say whether the virus can be transmitted via urine or saliva, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention affirmed Friday that sexual contact was a mode of Zika virus transmission.

“That fact that the virus was found with the capacity to cause infection is not proof that it can contaminate other people through those fluids,” Myrna Bonaldo, one of the scientists at Brazil’s Oswaldo Cruz Foundation who made the discovery, told Reuters

Dr. Paulo Gadelha, the president of Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, which is part of the country’s health ministry, reminded Brazilians that Aedes aegypti mosquitos remain the primary vector for transmitting the virus, but that didn’t stop him from warning pregnant women not to kiss strangers at the Carnival celebrations kicking off tonight, Reuters reported

“In light of the possibility of being in contact with someone who is infected, do not kiss, obviously,” Gadelha said. ”We cannot say today that there is no possibility of transmission.”

New sex guidelines for pregnant women

The discovery comes days after the Dallas County Health and Human Services Department reported the first case of sexually transmitted Zika virus in the United States, after a patient contracted the virus from a sexual partner who had recently returned from Venezuela. On Thursday, Brazil reported the first Zika infection from a blood transfusion, and urged prospective donors to delay donations a full 30 days after recovering from a Zika infection.

After the Dallas report, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its Zika virus public health recommendation. Until the agency knows more about how the virus can be spread, it’s advising pregnant women to avoid traveling to the 30 countries and territories with active Zika transmissions.

If a pregnant woman’s male sexual partner lives in or travels to an area with active Zika transmissions, the agency recommends using condoms for vaginal, anal and oral sex during her pregnancy.

Women trying to conceive should consult their health care providers before traveling to any areas with ongoing Zika transmissions and should adhere to the strictest standards of mosquito bite prevention.

“The potential hazard to the fetus is so substantial and so tragic that this looks like a very prudent recommendation until we learn more,” Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical School, told The New York Times.

Poor women most vulnerable to sexually transmitted Zika

Still, the implications of sexually transmitted Zika are quite serious for a population that struggles with teen pregnancy and a dearth of sex education.

According to a 2014 government health report, teenage pregnancy rates are driven by high figures in Brazil’s northeast region — the same area that’s been hardest hit by Zika virus. Of those teenage mothers, about 1 percent — or 30,000 girls – are between the ages of 10 and 15.

Sex education in Brazil is disjointed and controversial, according to Al Jazeera America, unsurprising in a heavily Catholic country with strict abortion law. Under such circumstances, women with fewer resources for disease prevention, care and treatment will be disproportionally affected by Zika (and, should the link between the two be proven, microcephaly), according to Brandon Brown, an assistant professor at University of California, Riverside’s Center for Healthy Communities.

“If the United States is anything like the rest of the world, what we see is that high-income couples delay childbirth or adoption until an older age, compared to their lower-income counterparts,” Brown said.

“This results in fewer children for high-income women. Low-income women may have fewer resources to prevent pregnancy compared to women with a higher income,” he said. “Therefore, even for those intending to follow the mandate to not get pregnant, they may be unable to do so due to lack of resources.”

That’s true for Hilda Venancio Silva, whose three-month-old son was born with microcephaly. Silva, 38, had to seek out information about birth control on her own. “To be honest, I never had any education about it,” Venancio told Al Jazeera America.

“It is true that many infectious diseases do have a higher impact on low-income individuals and in low-income settings,” Brown said. “HIV and TB are good examples of this. Not only does a high disease burden fall on low-income individuals, but it also historically falls on lower-income countries.”

Excessive Tanning Could Be A Sign Of A Deeper Problem

(Reuters Health) – Women who use indoor tanning salons are more likely to have mood or body issues than the average person, suggests new research.

Compared to the general population, women who reported tanning at least 10 times in the last year were more likely to be obsessed with real or imaginary flaws in their appearance, to have episodes of depression related to changes in seasons and to have high stress levels.

“It may be the case in clinical settings that when we see people who do a lot of tanning, it may be a flag to look at other mental health issues,” said senior author Sherry Pagoto of the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester.

Previous research found that people tan due to needs stemming from their mood and appearance, the researchers write in a letter in JAMA Dermatology.

“We see sometimes with tanners an effort to get tanner and tanner and a feeling that you’re never tan enough,” Pagoto told Reuters Health. That type of behavior is not unlike body dysmorphic disorder, which is when people feel there is an issue with their appearance that can’t be fixed.

Past research also suggests that people who tan may be at an increased risk of elevated stress and seasonal affective disorder – or SAD.

“We looked at these three things and we wanted to see if we found elevated rates among people who tan,” Pagoto said.

The researchers recruited 74 women, ages 19 to 63 years, who had been tanning at least 10 times in the past year and at least four times in the past two months.

They surveyed the women with questions that would help detect body dysmorphic disorder, SAD and elevated stress and then compared the women’s scores to what would be expected in the general population.

Overall, 39 percent of the women scored high enough to likely have body dysmorphic disorder, which is typically found in about 2 percent of all people.

About one in 10 people in the general population would be diagnosed with SAD, but more than half of the study participants scored high enough to be diagnosed with that condition.

Elevated stress was also found in about a third of the participants, but would only be expected in about 13 percent of the general population.

“It’s definitely the case that we’re seeing more of these psychiatric disorders,” said Pagoto.

People should be cautious about interpreting the results, which are drawn from only 74 people, said Erin Bonar, who was not involved in the new research but has studied the mental health of people who tan.

“I would be cautious with regard to the findings of co-morbidity since these participants were not formally diagnosed,” said Bonar, of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

But the new findings are consistent with previous results, she said.

Pagoto said the new study suggests tanning may be a sign of a much deeper problem that requires more attention.

“For parents who have teenage and college-age daughters who tan, this may be something to think about,” she said.

This Middle School Is Helping Students Earn College Credits

The students giggle, squirm and whisper to each other as their instructor gets ready to begin. It’s the start of a typical middle school class except for one thing: these 12-year-olds are taking a college course.

Being college-ready has a new meaning at middle schools in Hayward Unified, where some 7th- and 8th-graders stay after school to take introductory college courses from local community college instructors. While many districts in California give high school students the opportunity to earn college credit, Hayward may be the only district in California – and possibly in the nation – to offer college courses to middle school students after school.

Instructors at Hayward’s Chabot College teach classes at the middle schools ranging from Early Childhood Development to Engineering to Music. Each of the five middle schools in the Bay Area school district offers one class per semester. Although the instructors adjust their teaching to be more appropriate for middle school students, the content is the same as courses offered at Chabot. The credits earned are transferable to community colleges and four-year universities.

Offering college classes for 12-year-olds might seem like another example of putting pressure on students at ever-younger ages, but the impetus for the program is quite different, Hayward administrators say.

Middle school occurs at a critical juncture for students, who face peer pressure as they try to form their own identity and envision their future. Hayward educates about 22,500 students, three-quarters of whom come from low-income families.

Administrators in the district say that many of their students have no relatives or friends who have gone to college and are in danger of thinking or being told that college is not for them.

If they pass a college class and get credit, then “no one can tell them they’re not college material,” said Chien Wu-Fernandez, assistant superintendent of student and family services for Hayward Unified. “They have just proved that they are.”

The district wanted to use after-school time to propel students ahead, rather than focusing only on remediation or support for classroom work, Wu-Fernandez said. “We thought, ‘What better way to promote college and career readiness?’”

Some students could possibly earn enough credits to graduate with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree, she said, but the primary purpose of the program is exposure to college work.

In queries sent to public information officers from California’s community colleges and directors of the state’s after-school programs, no one offered any other examples of middle school students taking college classes. Officials with national advocacy groups for expanded learning programs, such as the Afterschool Alliance and Jobs for the Future, also said say they knew of no similar program.

David Farbman, senior researcher for the National Center on Time & Learning, an advocacy group for expanded learning programs, was surprised to learn that middle school students were tackling college courses during their after-school program.

“As long as they can handle it, it’s good to challenge them,” he said. “You don’t want to push kids too hard, but given the right support, they can achieve at high levels.”

Classes average 20 students, but music and theater classes can be as large as 35 students. Students must spend 18 hours in class per unit, and most classes are for three units. On days when the students are not in class, the after-school staff helps them develop good study habits and complete their work for the college class.

“It’s college with support,” Wu-Fernandez said. “They’re not doing it on their own.”

Roberto Mendez, who coordinates the program for Chabot, said the college chooses courses the middle school students can handle. “They’re not taking calculus or chemistry,” he said.

Likewise, Hayward school staff members select the students carefully to make sure they are ready for the class, Mendez said. “The assumption is that they are upper-level students who need to be challenged.”

Vanessa Cormier is manager of Middle College for Chabot, the program that typically offers college classes to students in high school. She counsels faculty who are interested in teaching courses at Hayward middle schools.

“I want to make sure they understand the audience they are teaching,” she said. Middle school students, Cormier said, have a more active style of learning, not just physically but mentally, too. They also do better working in groups, she said.

Besides learning the course content, the students are also learning the soft skills, Cormier said, such as persistence and self-regulation. Teaching those skills is not new for college faculty, she added. “The majority of our students don’t come out of their home ready to live on their own.”

But not all faculty are a good fit for the program, Cormier said. In one case, an art instructor who came to Ochoa Middle School did not handle the students well. The class was cancelled, and the instructor will no longer teach middle school students, she said.

So far, the Chabot College classes offered to Hayward middle school students, typically worth three units, include:

  • Anthropology 5: Cultures of the U.S. in Global Perspective
  • Business 12: Introduction
  • Early Childhood Development 56: Child Growth and Development
  • Engineering 10: Introduction (two units)
  • Entrepreneurship 3: Introduction
  • Entrepreneurship 5: Entrepreneurial Mindset
  • Humanities 68: World Mythology
  • Music 1: Introduction
  • Music 3: World Music
  • Sociology 1: Principles of Sociology
  • Theater Arts 1: Introduction to Acting

The classes are funded by state and federal after-school program grants. The district pays Chabot $ 300 to $ 500 per student, depending on the course and cost of textbooks – about what it would cost the students to take the same class at the community college. The district charges students a $ 25 processing fee, but no students are turned away because their families can’t pay the fee.

Data from Chabot College show that for the first three semesters of the Hayward program – summer 2014, fall 2014 and spring 2015 – enrollment in the classes was 175, with some students taking more than one class. The students completed 72 percent of their classes with a grade of C or better.

These results demonstrate that Hayward students “will excel when given the opportunity,” said Superintendent Stanley Dobbs.

Wu-Fernandez said students who don’t pass a class are encouraged to try again the following year. Just taking the course helps them realize that college work is “much easier than they thought,” she said.

Students who took Early Childhood Development 56 this past fall semester at Ochoa Middle School said they signed up for the course to find out what college was like. Many of them are part of The Puente Project, a UC Berkeley program that focuses on helping educationally underrepresented high school students go to college. The Hayward program is a pilot to see if the project should expand to include middle school students.

The college course met for two hours every Tuesday and Thursday. During one class session with instructor Nidia Sanchez-Rico, students took turns reading aloud sections of the college textbook that were projected onto a screen – with some students tripping over words such as productivity, incompetence and psychosocial. Others read the material flawlessly.

Each week, Sanchez-Rico chose 20 words from the assigned chapter for the students to define and use in sentences to help them with the reading material, something she did not require of her college students.

“I provide more support for them,” Sanchez-Rico said of her middle school students.

After reading sections of the book, students discussed the content in small groups and later with the whole class. That day, the focus was on middle childhood – the age of the students. They talked about their own families and home environments.

At the start of the course, students were shy, Sanchez-Rico said. “But now they are talking and participating. They have confidence.”

The students were given a study guide before each test, the same guide given to her college students, she said. Her exams have easy, medium and tough questions, but she did not include the tough questions for the middle school students.

Her Hayward students, mostly 7th-graders, expressed enthusiasm for the course.

Michelle Cruz, dressed in a bright pink jacket, said she “learned lots of different things, such as the changes inside your body when you are pregnant and that the man affects the sex of the baby.”

The students had to write a paper on nature and nurture and a pamphlet encouraging mothers to breastfeed.

Although some of the students admitted that they did not do all the reading, Edith Perez kept up with the course.

“You have to read the book if you want a good grade,” she said. When she was working on the pamphlet encouraging mothers to breastfeed, her father expressed concerns about her being too young to learn such things, she said. But she convinced him she was ready.

Her father, Jaime Perez-Gonzalez, who began working in the fields when he was 5, told his daughter he was proud of her for doing well in a college class. Edith earned a B.

Now the owner of a window washing company, Perez said he and his wife are pleased with the program, which is helping Edith know what to expect from college.

“We’re 100 percent behind her,” he said. “She is my little baby and has surprised me. She is so focused.”

Corporate Interests Take Aim at Local Democracy

By Brendan Fischer, Kim Haddow, and Mary Bottari

Across America, corporate interests are taking aim at local government.

2015-11-20-1447980874-2094146-Koch.jpgWith Congress gridlocked and a majority of state legislatures controlled by right-wing interests, cities have become laboratories of democracy for progressive policies like a higher minimum wage, LGBTQ protections, or parental leave.

In response, corporate interests and groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) have increasingly been turning to state “preemption” measures–some of them unprecedentedly aggressive–to override an array of progressive policy gains at the city or county level.

“2015 saw more efforts to undermine local control on more issues than any year in history,” said Mark Pertschuk, director of the watchdog group Preemption Watch.

Last year, state legislatures in at least 29 states introduced bills to block local control over a range of issues, from the minimum wage, to LGBTQ rights, to immigration, according to Preemption Watch. Seventeen states considered more than one preemption bill.

And just a few weeks into 2016 state legislative sessions, it’s clear that ending local authority will continue to be the go-to strategy for state legislators and their special interest allies, as a means of blocking earned sick days, minimum wage hikes, tobacco and fracking bans, pro-worker policies, or anti-discrimination laws.

Bills to stop local fracking bans have been already filed this year in Colorado, New Mexico and and Florida. Minimum wage preemption bills have been filed in Washington and Illinois. Legislation has been filed in Indiana, Michigan and New Mexico to stop local action on fair scheduling ordinances. Advocates are tracking preemption bills targeting LGBTQ ordinances in South Carolina, Virginia, Oklahoma and Indiana, and expect to see bills in North Carolina, Mississippi and West Virginia. Unions are bracing for bills in a spate of states aimed at limiting municipal labor standard-setting.

In Florida alone, lawmakers have already filed more than 20 bills seeking to preempt local authority on issues including oil and gas regulations, construction standards for abortion clinics and whether a town can declare itself a sanctuary city.

And in Oklahoma, legislators just introduced a wide-ranging bill to effectively undo home rule and local control. Under the proposal, local governments would be prohibited from doing almost anything that isn’t specifically authorized by the state legislature.

Troubling preemption trends emerged in 2015

Over time, bills interfering in local democracy have become wider in scope and more hostile to home rule. More industries and special interest groups now consider preemption a legislative imperative, using it not just to stop the advancement of policies they disagree with, but also to undo elections and repeal laws already on the books.

These efforts to consolidate power at the state level and stop local progress are part of a long-term corporate-driven strategy. The Koch-funded ALEC and its local offshoot, the American City County Exchange (ACCE), have been central to this anti-local democracy effort. ALEC has long pushed bills like the “Living Wage Mandate Preemption Act” to block local governments from raising the wage. It has worked to preempt community-run municipal broadband in 19 states – which benefits ALEC funders like AT&T and Comcast — and local anti-GMO policies, which benefits ALEC funders like CropLife America.

A new trend that emerged in 2015 was the introduction of wide-ranging bills prohibiting local control over a broad set of issues, such as Michigan’s “Death Star” preemption bill (HB 4052) which bars local governments from regulating everything from paid sick days and minimum wage to scheduling for retail stores and ban the box ordinances. Originally, the bill included language that could have eliminated local protections against LGBTQ discrimination. That section was not contained in the final law, but it did pass in Arkansas. North Carolina also considered a “Death Star” preemption bill last year, but too late in the session to move it.

2015 also saw narrowly-focused bills evolve into comprehensive attacks on local control. These so-called “Christmas Tree” bills start out as say, a ban on local plastic bag regulations, and are then hung with an array of other provisions crafted to override local lawmaking. For example, a law in Missouri enacted last year that blocked local government authority to enact paid sick days or raise the minimum wage started as a plastic bag ban.

Last year also saw the rise of “super-preemption” bills that not only block local governments from enacting regulations, but give corporations and individuals the right to sue cities or counties if they don’t comply.

Here is a snapshot of some corporate-backed efforts to override local control in 2015:

Paid Sick Days and Minimum Wage

Bills prohibiting local government from enacting paid sick day guarantees were enacted in Michigan, Oregon, and Missouri in 2015. Republican-controlled legislatures in Montana and Virginia also passed paid sick days preemption, but the state’s governors ultimately vetoed the measures. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon’s veto, however, was overridden by the Republican-controlled legislature.

The spread of these bills can be tied to ALEC and its funder the National Restaurant Association (NRA), which represents big chain restaurants. At ALEC’s August 2011 meeting in New Orleans, an NRA executive shared a paid sick day preemption bill that had recently been signed into law by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, as well as an NRA target list and map of state and local paid sick leave policies. In the years following that meeting, similar paid sick day preemption legislation was enacted in sixteen states, in most cases introduced by ALEC members, and with backing from the state NRA affiliates.

Last year–in addition to the five states that passed paid sick day preemption bills–legislation was also introduced in Alabama, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.

Regulation of Fracking

In recent years, dozens of cities in states like Ohio and Pennsylvania have banned hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, citing public health concerns about water contamination and earthquakes.

Yet after residents of Denton, Texas voted for an anti-fracking ballot initiative in November 2014, the oil and gas industry began to fight back. The industry quickly sued, and ALEC legislators in the state capitol responded with a deluge of bills to override local authority over public health–even though most Texans support local control over fracking.

ALEC has acknowledged its role in promoting fracking preemption, and at the December meeting, of ALEC’s local government-focused spinoff, ACCE, members were warned of the “epidemic” of “draconian” local restrictions against fracking, according to a report from the meeting. Jacki Pick of the Koch-backed National Center for Policy Analysis (and a talk show host on Glenn Beck’s “The Blaze” network) warned that “the oil and gas industry will be destroyed unless conservatives act.”

Both Texas and Oklahoma adopted laws preempting local governments from regulating the oil and gas industry in 2015. Bills were also introduced in Florida and New Mexico. In Wisconsin, where the fine silica sand used in fracking is mined, the Republican-controlled state legislature also considered bills to override local frac sand mining regulation.

LGBTQ Rights

The religious right has also begun using a preemption strategy to override local protections for LGBTQ rights.

“The push for LGBT nondiscrimination protections–laws that would cover both sexual orientation and gender identity in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodations–have stalled at the statewide level,” said Andy Garcia, Program Manager at the Equality Federation. “As a result, efforts have shifted to the city and county level in the form of municipal nondiscrimination ordinances.”

“Hundreds of these [nondiscrimination ordinances] have passed,” Garcia said. “In Florida, for example, more than half the population is protected through these ordinances.”

Yet in 2015, at least six states took up bills to override these local protections.

In Arkansas, the legislature enacted SB202, which reverses local nondiscrimination ordinances in Little Rock and Eureka Springs in the name of “uniformity.” Yet because the state does not protect against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, the law actually guarantees that there can be no protections.

In Indiana, Republicans purported to add minimal LGBT protections to the state’s non-discrimination statutes, but coupled it with complete preemption of any local non-discrimination ordinances. The preemption language was removed but some politicians are still seeking to reinstate it.

Texas also considered legislation to override local non-discrimination ordinances, such as those in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston. That bill hasn’t passed but could return in a future session. Similar bills were introduced last session in Mississippi, North Carolina, and West Virginia.

Plastic Bag Bans

After the Arizona cities of Tempe and Flagstaff enacted local regulations on plastic bags, the GOP-controlled Arizona legislature passed a law overriding local control.

As Tempe Councilmember Lauren Kuby wrote for PR Watch, plastic bag preemption was a hot topic at the most recent ACCE meeting, with a bag industry representative warning that local plastic bag regulations serve as “stepping stones to the regulation of all packaging.”

ACCE’s Executive Director Jon Russell has also written in favor of states overriding local control over shopping bags–an odd position for the head of a group purportedly committed to strengthening local government.

In 2015, Missouri also enacted a law to prohibit any local unit of government from banning plastic bags.

Anti-Immigrant “Sanctuary Cities” Preemption

2015 also saw the spread of state bills to preempt so-called “sanctuary city” policies, proposals that also have their roots in ALEC model legislation.

Many cities and counties prohibit law enforcement from inquiring into a person’s immigration status and limit when people can be turned-over to immigration authorities.

Supporters say the policies are a means of promoting trust between immigrants and public officials: if immigrants fear deportation by coming in contact with police, they will hesitate to report crimes and testify as witnesses.

“When some people cannot report crimes, all people are less safe, not just immigrants,” said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, executive director of the Wisconsin-based Voces de la Frontera.

“Social movements successfully partnered with local progressive leadership to win these policies, and anti-immigrant [state] politicians with little or no connection to the people affected by these policies are trying to obstruct important gains,” she said.

Last year, following the anti-immigrant fervor whipped-up by Donald Trump and the murder of a young woman by an undocumented immigrant in California, at least eight states introduced bills to preempt local “sanctuary city” policies. North Carolina’s proposal became law.

To varying degrees, the proposals reflect provisions of the ALEC “No Sanctuary Cities for Illegal Immigrants Act.”

The ALEC task force that approved the bill in December 2009 included a lobbyist for Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), which had identified immigrant detention as a profit center important for its future growth (although CCA claims it did not vote on the legislation). The bill not only preempted local sanctuary city policies but also encouraged racial profiling by requiring police inquire into the immigration status of anybody they “suspect” is undocumented.

A few months later the “No Sanctuary Cities for Illegal Immigrants Act” was introduced in Arizona as SB 1070. After the Arizona bill was introduced, 30 of the bill’s 36 co-sponsors promptly received campaign contributions from donors in the for-profit prison industry. A similar law was subsequently enacted in Alabama.

The more recent proposals–in Texas, Florida, Michigan, New York, South Carolina, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Wisconsin–largely focus on preempting local sanctuary city policies. Virginia also introduced a bill that would hold a local government with “sanctuary city” policies responsible for any property damage caused by an undocumented immigrant.

Some proposals, like North Carolina’s law, also prohibit public officials from accepting foreign driver’s licenses or passports as proof of identity, even to pick one’s child up from school. Wisconsin legislators introduced a separate bill to override a Milwaukee ordinance providing local ID cards to immigrants and others.

Gun Violence “Super-Preemption”

Throughout the 1990s–with help from ALEC–the gun industry successfully pushed laws in almost every state prohibiting cities from regulating firearms. In recent years, the gun industry has sought to enact even greater barriers to local control with what Preemption Watch calls so “super-preemption” legislation.

These laws go beyond just blocking local regulations. These “super-preemption” bills additionally create what is known as a “private right of action” allowing individuals or groups the right to sue local governments and, in some cases, individual local officials, if they believe they are enforcing local firearms laws.

In 2015, North Carolina and Nevada enacted firearms super-preemption laws, joining Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wyoming, which adopted similar legislation in previous years. Firearms super-preemption bills were also introduced in Arizona, Iowa, Michigan and Texas. Additionally, bills were filed in six states to override local governments’ ability to regulate knives, and the states’ governors ultimately signed half of these into law.

Reversing Trends in 2016

Some state lawmakers and advocates are looking to reverse the corporate-backed trend towards preemption. In Minnesota, House Bill 221 aims to reverse preemption and give rights back to local governments. In Oregon, the “Raise the Wage” initiative, one of two potential measures that could make it to the November ballot, would allow local jurisdictions to set their own thresholds above the statewide minimum by removing a pre-emption law.

“For 2016, there’s good bad news and good news,” Pertschuk says. “The bad news is that dozens of harm-causing industries are ramping up for an assault on local democracy. The good news is that there has never before been a national grassroots movement this powerful and diverse fighting for the right to protect our families, communities, and workers at the community level.”

10 Thoughts That Happen During A Panic Attack

If you’ve never experienced a panic attack before, allow us to give you a little spoiler alert: They’re the absolute worst.

For many of the 40 million American adults who experience an anxiety disorder, panic attacks are a common occurrence. The physical symptoms alone are debilitating, and include labored breathing, chills and a spike in blood pressure.

However, perhaps the most draining symptom of a panic episode is the emotional aspect. There are crippling thoughts that happen during a panic attack, making it a terrifying mind-body experience.

We asked our Facebook community to share just some of the things that run through their mind during a panic attack. Check out some of their responses below – they’re further proof that mental health conditions are anything but easy.

1. “I don’t feel good.”

“My panic attacks start off as a feeling of something ‘not quite right’ going on in my body, then my mind goes on overdrive as I begin to obsess over every sensation I notice.” –Angela Bugli

When panic attacks first start, people may get sweaty palms or dizziness. This may initially cause them to feel like something else might be wrong.

2. “Oh no, not again.”

“[I think] these attacks will never go away. I know this is irrational, but I can’t make it stop.” –Jessi Merrill

Panic attacks are often a recurring symptom of mental illnesses, particularly for those with a panic disorder. However, just because someone has experienced a panic episode before doesn’t mean it’s any easier to handle.

3. “How embarrassed will I be this time because I can’t get past this unfounded fear?”

“I think about how silly I feel and how it’s all going to be okay. You know all of this, but the spiraling just keeps happening.” –Mendy Serbantez

Many fears at the core of anxiety are categorized as irrational. Whatever triggers the panic attack usually is unfounded — but the brain often doesn’t know the difference.

4. “Am I having a heart attack?”

“My chest starts to hurt, like my heart is racing horrifically fast. I’ll feel like I’m losing my mind… because nothing is really wrong but it definitely feels real. The tears will come along with the frustration at being out of control.” –Staci Lynne

Sometimes the chest tightens during a panic attack, prompting many to seek medical care. After one particularly bad panic episode, singer Demi Lovato said she went to the emergency room because she couldn’t catch her breath.

5. “People are judging me right now.”

“People truly need to learn the difference between normal fear and anxiousness and real anxiety disorders. I think many try to hide [anxiety disorders] and make excuses because they fear judgment.” –Laura Pederson

There’s a huge stigma surrounding mental health conditions. Panic attacks can sometimes be aggravated by fear of negative stereotyping, especially when they happen out of the blue in a public place.

6. “Why can’t I just be normal and brave like everyone else?”

“It feels like a veil is in front of you and nothing is real. A fear sets in and you feel like you may faint.” –Jennifer Brody Fass

Mental illness feels truly isolating, but it’s more commonplace than many people realize. Approximately one in four people will experience a mental health issue at some point in his or her life.

7. “I’m going to die.”

“[In the moment], you have no doubt that you are going to die. It is a feeling of being claustrophobic in your own body.” –Lisa Tolli Kogan

During the peak part of a panic attack, people experience painful symptoms such as an inability to catch their breath or pain in their chest. This can cause someone to feel like their body is shutting down.

8. “My loved ones will be disappointed.”

“My brain is truly rushing with thoughts. It usually ends with ‘my family/friends/coworkers will be disappointed with my inability to get through this.'” –Wendy Prater Mendoza

A strong support system is crucial when it comes to mental health conditions. If a loved one is experiencing an episode of panic, here are some dos and don’ts to follow.

9. “Please make it stop.”

“I think, ‘I have to get out of here, get away. I can’t do this, I can’t feel this.'” –Christy Sharshel

An average panic attack lasts anywhere from a few moments to 10 minutes – but each one of them feels long and excruciating.

10. “Just breathe.”

“I focus on this mantra, ‘breathe, breathe, just breathe,’ spoken slowly and repeatedly as I shove my fingertips into my chest in a vain attempt to make my heart not tear itself out of my body.” –Joyce Crook

People who have experienced panic attacks before may have go-to coping mechanisms that may help them calm down. For some, it’s a mantra. For others, it’s focusing on a particular item in their line of vision.

If you or someone you know is looking for some ways to calm down an anxious thought, try one of these tricks. Everyone deserves to feel well.

What The Dreams Of The Dying Reveal About The Human Spirit

Dr. Christopher Kerr was 12 years old when his father died. In the man’s final moments of life, Kerr said in a recent TEDx talk, his father reached out to him and told him to hurry because they needed to catch a plane to go on a fishing trip. It was the last time Kerr saw his father.

Death has followed Kerr in one way or another throughout his life, he said in the talk. He tried to avoid and defy it for many years as a medical student and then as an emergency room doctor. But since going to work in hospice care in 1999, Kerr has discovered a hidden value in the dying experience.

Kerr now serves as chief medical officer at the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care in New York and recently published a report on the dreams and visions of dying patients.

As Kerr’s patients approach death, many of them report having vivid and comforting dreams. The dreams frequently involve deceased loved ones, reaching out to them in some way to let them know everything is okay.

Time and again, Kerr and his fellow researchers found that these dreams help give patients a sense of meaning and spiritual comfort as their death approaches.

“End of life experiences represent a rich interconnectivity between body and soul, between the realities we know, those we don’t, between our past and our present,” Kerr said in his TEDx talk. “Most importantly, end of life experiences represent continuity between and across lives, both living and dead.”

Occasionally patients dream about past trauma and find themselves reliving painful experiences from life. But their dreams, Kerr said, sometimes help them heal spiritual wounds even as their bodies decline.

“I’m inspired by the strength of the human spirit and its endless quest to heal what is harmed and what is broken,” Kerr said.

Watch Kerr’s powerful TEDx talk above.

Bern the Witch-Hunters

2016-02-03-1454478046-2023843-IMG_5267.jpg

This Monday evening I stood snapping photographs of what amounted to the most important game of musical chairs I’ll ever witness.

As impassioned Iowans at the Waukee Community Centre in Dallas County appealed to each other on behalf of their candidates, I was struck by a feeling of great admiration and gratitude. Being a foreigner in an adoptive land, this was my first close-up view of American democracy in action: a civil, non-violent difference of opinion with a common goal shared by all.

But of the many moments to be had in the Democratic Caucus, one moment stood out for me. As someone from the larger Clinton camp was extolling his candidates virtues, a young man from the Bernie ranks piped up that Hillary was a criminal. But just as he said this, a dear friend who had driven me to the caucus centre reprimanded him in a soft and patient voice. “Bernie would never want you to say that,” she said, and he instantly quietened down, muttering “Oh, you’re right!” under his breath. The young man looked sheepish the rest of the night and even apologized to my friend (who, by the way, was caucusing for O’Malley) after all the delegates had been counted. Then, neighbours and friends alike all hugged each other and went home.

This exchange, so small and simple in its decency, only hit me properly once I had returned home…and opened my laptop. For the discourse being had on my screen, between two sides of the same political party, was a truly stark juxtaposition. With Hillary winning by the slimmest of margins, accusations of cheating and criminal conduct were hurled across cyberspace with the heat of a thousand suns. By the end of the first day, I would not have been surprised to read a blog accusing Secretary Clinton of framing Roger Rabbit to boot.

By his own terms, Bernie Sanders’ campaign can be taken as a social experiment, a grand national study to prove that a candidate can run without the aid of super-PAC money, negative attack ads, and tabloid-driven debates. In the eyes of magnanimous Bernie and his triumphant supporters that experiment has been a resounding success, proof positive that yes, it CAN be done.

But to end the findings there is to ignore the whole picture, for unfortunately this experiment has more results to yield than that, and a more troubling conclusion to draw.

The more disturbing realization is that, in the absence of name-calling, smear campaigns, misogyny and conspiracy theorizing by Bernie, his supporters have compensated by doing it all themselves.

Now, let me preface that I am of course not speaking for every Bernie Sanders supporter in this blog, but neither is this some vague generalization. I have a large network of liberal friends in this country, and many of them are in the Hillary camp. The majority of them are women, and every one of them has multiple stories of being on the receiving end of acrimonious Bernie supporters, and I don’t mean over this primary period, I mean EVERY day of this primary period. Throw a stone on Facebook and you will find someone who has been harassed or had to block someone else for this reason, and in the wake of the Iowa caucus I have had numerous interactions myself.

The ultimate irony is that, after lionising their man as the integrity candidate and vaunting their movement for being the “clean” campaign, Team Bernie has muddied their hands on his behalf, pumping so much vitriol through the veins of social media as to render it a zero sum.

The Sanders campaign has no need for attack ads, their supporters write infinitely more toxic slurs and accusations in countless blogs, tweets, Facebook posts and memes. Bernie doesn’t have to talk about Clinton’s “damn emails”, his fans have already upgraded to analysing every caucus coin toss for the merest hint of conspiracy. Neither does he have to resort to the indignity of calling his opponent names, as his loyal mob are already calling her, AND her supporters, every name in the book, and only show signs of getting worse. Even the beloved chorus of “Feel the Bern” has been warped and twisted from its original context, abrogated to the more violent and misogynistic chant of “Bern the witch!”, less a policy-based mic-drop and more of a social media petrol-bomb.

And the saddest part: Bernie most certainly DOES NOT approve this message.

Worryingly, the equation seems to be that the nicer Bernie Sanders is, the more his supporters feel entitled to be mean in his name. And while, of course, no side can claim to be perfect in this regard, in the many disparaging posts and messages I’ve read from Clinton supporters it is Bernie’s policies and viability that tends to be targeted rather than the man himself, and they rarely target his supporters personally.

Now, I can picture many of Sanders’ fans proclaiming their right to free speech. They will argue that their commentary is valid and an individual choice not connected with the campaign, which I suppose is fine, except that…you can’t have it both ways. You can’t use your candidate’s menschy-ness as evidence of your side’s higher moral authority, and then turn around and act like trolls to the other Democrat in the race. It’s just so…Republican.

And this is a disquieting notion, because it belies something nasty and insidious at the heart of American politics. The central argument of Sanders’ virtuous revolution is that it was the politicians and their convoluted corporate infrastructures that infected the people with spin, hearsay and paranoia, and perhaps he was right. But if this race is any indication, once that manipulation is taken away the masses are just as capable of manipulating themselves, inventing their own bogeyman (or woman) and amassing an arsenal of slings and arrows with which to assault them.

The era of Super-PACs may be drawing to a close, with the Koch brothers scratching their heads at their lack of influence and Jeb finding zero return on his investment. But we may be entering an even more unsettling phase of politics, the era of the “grass roots super-PAC”, with all the good AND bad that brings.

If this nation is to move forward in the way that Senator Sanders hopes, into a realm of dignity and high-mindedness, it is going to be a painful birth. Whether it is a destructive habit honed from a lifetime of political indoctrination, the drinking of GOP Kool-Aid, or something darker that lurks on the fringes of idealistic fervour, we ALL need to hold ourselves accountable. What is the point of changing the way our country’s leaders comport themselves if we the people remain the same?

So as we move inexorably to the New Hampshire primary and every primary after that, whether we Feel the Bern or Stand With Her, it would behoove us all to consider our moral absolutes.

After all, we have to think for ourselves now, and the experiment is not over.

9 Important Questions About Zika Virus, Answered

There are many things we don’t know about Zika virus, the mosquito-borne disease that may infect three to four million people before the epidemic dies out, according to the World Health Organization.

Experts suspect Zika may be responsible for thousands of babies born with birth defects and an increase in neurological disorders, but it’s going to be a while before we have clear answers on if, and how, the virus actually causes these problems.

On Monday WHO declared that clusters of these birth defects in French Polynesia and Brazil, as well as their possible link to Zika virus, are a public health emergency of international concern. The designation, which the international health agency has only ever applied to three other disease outbreaks, will marshal global resources to help research the virus and its possible connection to the birth defect microcephaly and neurological disorders like Guillian-Barre syndrome. The PHEIC declaration will also help expedite research on creating fast diagnostic tools, vaccines and cures.

Complex, long-term studies are underway to assess the virus, WHO officials said. Until then, here’s what we know about Zika and its potential causal link to these serious conditions.

1. What is Zika virus?

Zika virus is a disease that can produce mild symptoms such as fever, rash, conjunctivitis and joint pain. The disease is so mild, in fact, that researchers estimate one in five people infected with Zika virus won’t even know they have it — and those who do feel symptoms only experience them for two to seven days.

Zika is a type of flavivirus, which means it is closely related to other diseases like chikungunya, dengue, and yellow fever. It’s transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also carries the other flaviviruses.

The virus is named after the Zika forest in Uganda, where it was first isolated from a rhesus monkey in 1947.

Handfuls of cases have popped up across Africa and parts of Asia, but researchers considered it an obscure illness until 2013, when it caused a widespread outbreak in French Polynesia. Eleven percent of the population sought care for symptoms. Then in 2015, the disease began to spread rapidly throughout Brazil, where it’s estimated that more than one million people may have contracted the virus.

2. How do you get Zika virus?

Mosquito bites.

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne disease, which means that if a mosquito bites a person infected with Zika virus and then bites a second person, that second person could contract the disease.

The fact that Zika virus appears to coincide with Brazil’s sharp increase in babies born with microcephaly suggests that pregnant mothers can also pass the virus on to their fetuses.

There’s also some early lab evidence to support this: Traces of the virus were found in the amniotic fluid samples of two pregnant women from Paraiba, Brazil, whose fetuses had been diagnosed with microcephaly via ultrasound, the Pan American Health Organization reported in December. Traces of Zika virus were also found in the blood of a microcephalic baby who died soon after birth.

There are also some preliminary studies that suggest Zika virus could be transmitted sexually. One report from 2011 described how a husband who had traveled through Senegal, where he caught Zika virus, went home to Colorado. There he appears to have sexually transmitted the virus to his wife, who hadn’t traveled with him, reports The New York Times. Then in 2013, scientists found traces of the virus in the semen of a man from French Polynesia, despite the fact that there were no more traces of the virus in his blood.

Despite these case studies, Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasized that mosquitos are the main mode of transmission for Zika virus in a press conference Jan. 28.

“The science is clear to date that Zika virus is primarily transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito,” she said. Schuchat also pointed out that the virus is in the bloodstream very briefly. Most people who get it will clear it from their bloodstream in about a week.

3. Why is everyone so scared of Zika virus?

During the 2013 outbreak in French Polynesia, health officials there noted the outbreak coincided with a 20-fold increase in Guillian-Barre syndrome, a neurological disorder in which a body’s immune system attacks its own nerves. It can result in tingling in the extremities, muscle weakness and temporary paralysis. Most people will make a full recovery, but the syndrome can cause death in some rare cases.

But it wasn’t until 2015, during Brazil’s outbreak, that scientists linked the outbreak to a severe birth defect called microcephaly. Microcephaly is when a baby is born with an abnormally small head, possibly because its brain didn’t grow properly in the womb. The birth defect can result in lifelong complications like intellectual disability, developmental disorders and seizures.

From 2010 to 2014, Brazil only saw an average of 156 cases of microcephaly per year. But from Oct. 2015 to Jan. 2016, Brazil has recorded over 4,000 reported cases, though they have been able to investigate and discard 462 initial diagnoses according to an update last month

4. Is there a way to protect myself against Zika virus?

Unfortunately, there is no vaccine or cure for Zika virus.

The CDC expects there will be a few local transmissions of Zika virus in the U.S., while the WHO expects Zika virus to touch every country in the Americas except Canada and Chile, as those places aren’t good environments for the kind of mosquito that transmits the disease.

However, it’s important to remember that a Zika outbreak in the U.S. is likely to be limited and short-lived, and that this isn’t an issue most Americans should worry about. Generally, if you’re not in any of the Latin American or Caribbean destinations with ongoing Zika virus transmission, you’re not in any danger of getting bitten by Zika virus-carrying mosquitos.

If you’re a pregnant woman contemplating travel to these destination, the CDC advises you to postpone your trip. Barring that, all American travelers should follow the strictest mosquito bite prevention protocol while in these areas. They include wearing long sleeves and pants; treating clothing, gear and tents with permethrin; and using repellants with active ingredients like DEET, picaridin and IR3535.

Scientists suspect that once you’ve been infected with Zika virus, it does confer immunity to future infections. However, Schuchat pointed out, they don’t know how long this immunity lasts.

“This is a fairly new virus in terms of what we understand of it, and so we try to keep an open mind,” she said.

5. Do we know for sure that Zika virus causes microcephaly?

It sure seems like it, but global health experts are reserving judgement on this until scientists gather more evidence.

What we know for sure is that Brazil notified WHO about an alarming increase of babies born with microcephaly in Oct. 2015. They then later connected it to the country’s ongoing and widespread outbreak of Zika virus, which began spreading dramatically in May of 2015

So far in preliminary tests, scientists have found some correlational evidence for the link between Zika virus and stunted brain development in babies. The CDC published research last week that suggests an association between the virus and the birth defect: among a cohort of 35 babies born with microcephaly in Brazil between Aug. to Oct. 2015, all of their mothers had either lived in or visited a Zika virus-affected area during pregnancy. Twenty-five of the babies had severe microcephaly, which is when the head circumference is more than three standard deviations below average for their age, and 17 had at least one neurological abnormality.

Not all researchers think that Brazil’s initial count of over 4,000 reported microcephalic infants are cases of true microcephaly, however, suggesting that the numbers may be spiking because more people are aware of the condition and looking for it.

Schuchat concedes this may be true. In the press conference, she said microcephaly had a “looseness” about it. The condition can also be caused by chromosomal abnormalities, drug and alcohol abuse, severe malnutrition, and infections like German measles, chicken pox, toxoplasmosis and cytomegalovirus. Initial microcephaly diagnoses need to be double-checked, she said, and researchers have to make sure the condition wasn’t caused by any other environmental factor.

While a causal link between Zika and the birth defect is still unclear, the initial evidence was enough to prompt governments in Brazil, El Salvador, Colombia, Jamaica and Puerto Rico to advise women against getting pregnant.

6. Does a pregnant woman need to have symptoms for her fetus to run the risk of microcephaly?

Zika virus itself is such a mild experience that only one in five people ever feel any symptoms. But we don’t yet know whether a pregnant woman needs to experience symptoms for her fetus to be at risk of microcephaly, Schuchat said.

In the face of this ambiguity, the CDC advises pregnant women who have just traveled from a Zika virus-affected country to tell their OB/GYN about their travels and monitor their fetus’ progress with serial ultrasounds for signs of microcephaly.

The jury (of scientists) is still out on this issue, but French Polynesia reported an unusual increase in central nervous system abnormalities in fetuses and infants during 2014 and 2015, around the same time the virus was spreading through the islands. While none of the mothers had experienced Zika symptoms, four tested positive for signs of flavivirus, the genus of viruses that includes Zika, dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, this suggests “a possible asymptomatic [Zika virus] infection.”

While scientists suspect that such injury to a fetus’ brain occurs in the first trimester, there isn’t currently enough information to judge whether or not contracting Zika virus is more or less risky at different stages of pregnancy, said Schuchat.

“We do believe that the injury of microcephaly begins in the first trimester, but we don’t believe we have sufficient knowledge now to know what, if any, effects infection in the second and third trimester would have,” she said.

Schuchat also said that while more research needs to be conducted, scientists don’t believe getting Zika virus will have consequences for future pregnancies.

“We believe this is a time-limited infection in women and men and children — that people have symptoms up to a week, and so we don’t think this is one where you have months or years of chronic viral infection that could cause harm to [a future] baby,” she said.

7. What should pregnant women who have traveled from a Zika virus-affected country do now?

If you experienced any Zika virus symptoms during your travels or for up to two weeks after you get back, immediately alert your doctor, who will then decide whether or not to submit your blood sample for a Zika virus test. These can take up to two weeks to turn around and are conducted by a small number of specialized labs across the U.S.

If you’re symptomless, tell your OB/GYN about your travel and schedule an ultrasound as soon as possible to detect any brain or skull abnormalities that could reveal microcephaly. Consider scheduling a series of ultrasounds to closely monitor the development of your fetus, advises the CDC, and if your doctor finds evidence of possible microcephaly, consider getting an amniocentesis (which samples the amniotic fluid in the baby’s environment) to test for the presence of Zika. This procedure can only be performed after 15 weeks of pregnancy and comes with a small risk of miscarriage.

8. Does Zika virus also cause Guillian-Barré syndrome?

Guillian-Barré syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that can be caused by many different kinds of infections. The CDC notes that two-thirds of those who develop GBS do so after being sick with diarrhea or a respiratory illness. Bacterial and viral infections can also trigger GBS, and in the very rarest of cases, it can also develop after a person receives a vaccination.

Because of the sharp increase of Guillian-Barré syndrome in French Polynesia after its 2013 Zika outbreak, as well as the uptick in cases in Brazil, scientists believe Zika virus could be another illness that triggers the disorder.

But just like the pregnancy connection, more research needs to be conducted to understand the link between Zika virus and this rare disorder.

9. What should I do if I’ve traveled to a Zika virus-affected area and think I have the illness?

Go to your doctor if you have any of these four symptoms: a rash, joint pain, fever or conjunctivitis. Let them know about where you went, and when. Even if it isn’t Zika virus, it could be one of many other mosquito-borne diseases that need medical attention, like malaria or dengue fever.

To bring down your symptoms, take over the counter drugs like acetaminophen or paracetamol (Tylenol, etc.), but do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or any other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Rest and drink plenty of liquids.

Perhaps most importantly, take extra care to prevent mosquito bites, as the insects may be able to transfer the virus from you to an uninfected person.

Wild Science: Reading Feminism, Medicine and the Media

Wild Science: Reading Feminism, Medicine and the Media

Wild Scienceinvestigates the world-wide boom in ''health culture''. With sections addressing the new visual technologies which make the human body into a virtual territory, the diagnostic and medical practices centered around women''s bodies, and popular debates around genetics and identity,Wild Scienceargues that science is a practice bound in values and institutions, and argues for a responsible engagement with the public cultures of science and health.

Why Diet and Exercise Fail, Second Edition

Why Diet and Exercise Fail, Second Edition

We are surrounded by people who are selling weight loss techniques that do not work. Every year Americans spend tens of billions of dollars on diet books, diet products, and gym memberships. In spite of this, every year more of us become overweight. We need the knowledge that can help us to be better judges of weight loss claims. Why Diet and Exercise Fail shows how conventional wisdom on weight loss is incomplete. It debunks the theories behind popular weight loss techniques, including high fat diets, low carbohydrate diets, low sugar diets, and low calorie diets. The book presents the case that nutrition can explain the effectiveness of seemingly contradictory weight loss ideas and that the decreased nutrient content of our diet accounts for the increasing prevalence of obesity in modern times.

Hospice Is Allowing My Father-In-Law To Die With Dignity

Hospice. How do you envision it? It has become more common, it seems. Or maybe it only seems that way because we are becoming the caregivers for our elderly parents.

My father-in-law is now in hospice care and, in a strange way, I feel better about his situation knowing that he’ll be allowed to die with dignity.

Let’s face it, no matter how you cut it, when you go to a ‘senior village’ — or in his case a ‘senior high-rise’ — the chances are good you’re never moving again.

It starts out in your own place with total freedom to come and go. Keep up with your friends, invite them over, continue as you always had. But we all know what follows that lovely scenario if you live long enough.

Dad got a nice little efficiency apartment with a full kitchen, not that he cooked in it but, he had a fridge to keep his ice cream in.

The main dining room in the facility was lovely and the food wasn’t half bad.

The biggest problem with the building itself was how under elevatored it was. I know that’s not a word but, it should be in this case. People age in place waiting for the elevator to arrive.

You have to prove you don’t need ‘care’ in order to get in but when that time comes you are covered. It’s civilized in how it is structured, I believe. Our main concern, when dad went for his initial interview, was whether he would pass the test.

He’d had some scary moments while living in an apartment in our home and we hoped we hadn’t waited too long. I wish I’d had a drum to do a rim shot as we watched him answer all the questions with ease and humor.

Once he was settled in we breathed a sigh of relief. There were lots of things to do there and we hoped he would make new friends. Nope. He would eat breakfast, then take three buses to his friend’s house, around the corner from our house, and they would drive to the senior center in South Philly they had been going to for years.

Old habits die hard.

This went on for about a year before he had a mental breakdown and was rushed to the hospital. Turned out, he had stopped taking his meds and we never knew. He continued to get them refilled but then stashed them in the bathroom.

After his stay in the hospital, it was determined he needed an aide for, at least, 12 hours a day. We found a very good one who was with him for two years. By the second year, after a couple of falls in the night, we added another aide so he had help 24/7.

His trips on the bus were limited because he couldn’t leave without his aide, so his friend, Harry, would come have afternoon coffee with him, almost daily.

Along with the mental decline came physical limitations. He was losing weight and becoming very frail.

After another trip to the hospital, he needed assisted living.

I orchestrated his move from Massachusetts to Philadelphia when he was 80. He needed to get out of the three-bedroom home he had been rattling around in for 12 years since Mom passed. And we were concerned about his driving late at night after a couple of cocktails.

He was afraid his furniture wouldn’t fit in the one-bedroom apartment we’d found for him. I literally drew everything out to scale to assure him it would be fine.

I did it again in 2000 when we bought a triplex so he would have his own apartment in the same building with us.

I believe his comment when he realized he’d be in the efficiency was, “The next time they move me I’ll be in a damn breadbox!”

He ended up loving it.

Getting him into the senior high-rise was difficult but we managed to make everything fit with few deletions.

When the time came for assisted living last spring we were left with only his dresser, TV, nightstand and tons of family photos.

Last week, after another trip to the hospital, the discussion of hospice came up. We learned he could stay where he is and receive hospice care. It was a relief.

My sister-in-law is in LA. She and my husband have had several discussions this past week as things progressed. But, here’s the deciding factor, his living will.

We’ve had a copy since 1988 but hadn’t read it since then. Maybe we should have because he could not be more specific and I’m afraid we didn’t follow his directives as he might have liked.

“If the situation should arise in which there is no reasonable expectation of my recovery, from physical or mental disability, I request that I be allowed to die and not be kept alive by artificial means or ‘heroic measures.’ I do not fear death itself as much as the indignities of deterioration, dependence, and hopeless pain. I, therefore, ask that medication be mercifully administered to me to alleviate suffering even though this may hasten the moment of death.

This request is made after careful consideration. I hope you who care for me will feel morally bound to follow its mandate. I recognize this appears to place a heavy responsibility upon you, but it is with the intention of relieving you of such responsibility and of placing it upon myself in accordance with my strong convictions, that this statement is made.”

We hear you now, Dad.

Porn and Critical Thinking: The Importance of Using Your Head When Looking at Scientific Results

Recently, my colleagues and I accidentally reinvigorated public discussions of pornography’s impact on the treatment of women by publishing an archival study[i] examining the correlates of pornography use. Although limited in its scope, and never really intended for public consumption, our findings, which surprised many people (including us to some extent), captured media attention for a few weeks, and appear to have briefly rekindled public interest in porn research. For those who are not familiar with our study, we examined the responses of over 25,000 Americans collected over the course of 35 years, and found evidence — in contrast to pervasive cultural beliefs — that pornography users in the sample held more gender egalitarian attitudes than non-users on three of our five indices. Specifically, those who indicated that they had watched an X-rated movie in the past year were more likely to agree that women are suited for politics, should be free to work outside the home, and should be able to access abortion.

While we are the first to admit that the interpretation of our findings must be qualified by several important shortcomings with the study, the pushback we have received in some public forums — including accusations that we are uncritical apologists of Big Porno — is quite at odds with the actual weaknesses of the study, and has reminded us that most people lack access to basic research concerning pornography use. Mirroring trends in public discourse, it may surprise some people to know that the topic of pornography has contributed to considerable conflict within academic circles for nearly 50 years. Since the late 1960s, researchers have asserted many (sometimes conflicting) effects of viewing the stuff, the most controversial of which concerns the idea that pornography use increases the risk for sexual assault. Considerable research has been conducted on both sides of the argument[ii],[iii],[iv],[v], but a research consensus remains elusive. Because concerns about sexual assault, rape culture, and pornography use have all risen to cultural prominence (and for good reasons), I thought this to be a good time to discuss one of the fundamental reasons that the link between sexual assault and pornography use remains unclear. Academics don’t really understand what porn is.

These days, many people argue that sexual depictions on the whole aren’t the issue, but rather, pornography featuring violent content is the root of the problem. In the same breath, such people often point to a content analysis[vi] which claims that 88 percent of popular mainstream porn videos (DVD and VHS) contain depictions of aggression. While that would certainly be concerning if the figure was meaningful, there are several reasons to be critical of this study. One common criticism of content analyses is that the researchers conducting them tend to find what they’re looking for, and Ana Bridges, the leading author of this paper, has known affiliations with prominent contemporary anti-pornography feminists Robert Jensen and Gail Dines. Another point of concern is that these results literally stand alone: You will not find another content analysis of porn conducted in last 40 years (and there have been dozens) that report numbers anywhere near that high. There are also problems with the methodology. For example, this study considered insertion of a penis into the mouth in a manner that obstructs breathing, which occurred in 54 percent of analyzed scenes, as “gagging,” a form of violence. I don’t know about you folks, but the last I checked, sometimes going down on a guy involves holding one’s breath — that’s just how things work. Relatedly, this study has also been formally criticized[vii] for its lack of differentiation between consensual and nonconsensual “aggressive” acts, which arguably shouldn’t influence nonconsensual behaviors, due to their desired nature. So, how much porn is violent? Virtually all of it or almost none of it — it depends who you ask.

Concerns about the prevalence and nature of violent pornography are related to a much broader issue that the research community is only just beginning to grapple with[viii],[ix]: Pornography itself is not well understood. Despite years of trying, scientists, researchers, academics, and clinicians just can’t seem to agree when it comes to what counts as pornography. Depending on who you talk to, porn is:

    · something that is “obscene or licentious; foul, disgusting, or offensive; tending to produce lewd emotions”[x]

    · a verbal or pictorial representation that involves “the degrading and demeaning portrayal of the role and status of the human female…as a mere sexual object to be exploited and manipulated sexually”[xi]

    · “any kind of material aiming at creating or enhancing sexual feelings or thoughts in the recipient and, at the same time containing explicit exposure and/or descriptions of the genitals, and clear and explicit sexual acts,” but not “posing or acting naked such as seen in Playboy”[xii]

This problem is compounded when measuring porn use or exposing people to porn in the lab, as all researchers go about it in a slightly different way[xiii],[xiv]. In other words, two studies which say they’re looking at pornography use may be measuring or exposing people to very different things. This problem extends to the very few studies that have actually made the effort to examine who uses violent pornography. The natural consequence is that we have no idea how many people watch porn, how frequently they’re doing it, and what they’re watching. Given this state of affairs, how are we supposed to reach meaningful conclusions about the impact porn has on attitudes toward women or sexual assault?

And life was good for this Omaha, Nebraska, transplant-a talented drummer who originally moved to the big city to pursue his Rock ''N Roll dreams-until, suddenly, it wasn''t. Fast forward through seven years of working long hours, bingeing on late-night Chinese food, and drinking excessively; life had found Lüc forty pounds overweight and completely out of shape. But when he turned to the experts for advice-reading countless fitness and weight-loss books in the process-he discovered that they all made the same claim: You can''t drink alcohol if you want to lose weight. Lüc decided to take matters into his own hands to transform his body and his life his way-a sort of f*ck you to all those so-called experts.Full of charismatic wit and raucous stories about his life, The Drunk Diet will inspire and challenge you to become fitter, healthier, and happier. Lüc''s fitness philosophy isn''t about following a list of rigid rules or traditional do this, not that charts, but gaining a better understanding of how the body works and discovering what you''re personally willing to change about your lifestyle in order to reach your goals. For him, that meant trading in the crap he was eating for unprocessed, natural foods and embracing a newfound love for exercise, but never sacrificing his social life (or his love for cold beer). This is the story of how one chain-smoking, cheeseburger-eating, hard-partying Rock ''N Roller-a self-proclaimed out-of-shape, bloated asshole-grew into an avid runner and cyclist and, ultimately, a happier version of himself.

However, the ongoing dominance of the CCP belies the fact that much has also changed in relation to practices of government, including how authorities and citizens interact in the management of daily life. New Mentalities of Government in China examines how the privatization and professionalization of public’ service provision is transforming the nature of government and everyday life in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The book addresses key theoretical questions on the nature of government in China and documents the emergence of a range of new mentalities of government’ in China. Its chapters focus on areas such as clinical trials, conceptualizing government, consumer activity, elite philanthropy, lifestyle and beauty advice, public health, social work, volunteering; and urban and rural planning. Offering a topical examination of shifting modes of governance in contemporary China, this book will appeal to scholars in the fields of anthropology, history, politics and sociology.
